going forward or backwards

I'm trying to make a decision on a new cell phone since mine is dying.  Do I want to save money, go with a super basic phone, no bells and whistles and a basic and cheap plan.  Or... do I want to spend even more than I am now and get a fancy smartphone that does much more than make phone calls?  I'm inclined to go the basic money saving route since well, I like saving money.  But am I missing out on something I don't even know I'm missing out on by not having a fancy phone?  Hmmm... this is the kind of decision I get stuck on.  I need some opinions...
